GB100TT - SPECIAL EVENT STATION

What is GB100TT ?

GB100TT is a Special Event Station run by Wrexham Amateur Radio Society, and Scarlett point Amateur Radio Society. It is being run to celebrate the centenary of the Isle of Man TT Races.

It will be run from Scarlett Point Tower, just outside of Castletown, on the southernmost tip of the Isle Of Man.

It will run from 25th May-5th June 2007

Scarlett Point Tower

Possibly the best DX Spot in the World!....If a well known lager company made DX spots...Well...you get the drift. Scarlett Point Tower is run by a small, dedicated group of amateurs, who took a dilapidated Coastguard lookout tower, renovated it, and kitted it out for radio use!

WARSScarlett Point Tower is possibly the best DX Spot in Europe, its got Seawater, 270 degrees around it, its only 50 yards from the sea, its about a mile out of Castletown, so theres very little interference from computers, and other problematic electrical devices.

Take a look on their website, an amateur worked the US using an 817, 5W and a Miracle Whip (Who says they don't work!!)

When Wrexham ARS visited in 2004 they found it very easy to work good distances from the site, on HF 6 and 2, the field Trip in May was held the same weekend as the Backpackers contest, the team then got a chance to measure the field and the area around the tower, in order to work out the capabilities for the antenna system.

The Operators - HF/VHF - Colin Kenton - MW0JNI Colin first got licenced in 2005, obtaining the call MW3JNI, he then rose quite quickly (within a year) to MW0JNI, he was also 2W0JNI for a brief period! Colin is Secretary for Wrexham ARS. Colin was on the 2006 DXpedition, and that was his first taste of SE HF operating!

His initiation into HF operating was in 2 stages - He worked a few stations from the QTH of MW1MDH one night. However he was thrown headlong into HF one night by MW1MDH and MW1STE, at 'STEs QTH a couple of weeks later - in that few hours, we taught him all about the DX Cluster, we parked him up on a frequency and spotted him, he didn't think it was working, at first, but as it filtered round the world, the band lit up!

The Photo to the right shows Colin working the 6M station during VHF NFD 2005 - Click for a bigger picture

The Operators - HF/VHF - Mike Bryant - GW6NLP Mike 'NLP Discussing Locator Squares in 2004Mike was first licenced as GW6NLP in 1982, he obtained the call MW0BLL in December 1997, and reverted back to GW6NLP in November 2003, his main interest is 6 and 2 Meters, he is rarely on HF, although Mike has commented that ths trip could well be his 'baptism of fire' on HF, He's aiming to get on HF if 6 or 2 isn't active.

Mike will be on hand to deal with any amplifier problems - Mike has lots of experience in working with immense voltage!...Mike was on the 2004 DXpedition, and ran the VHF station entirely from the tower above (the picture was taken while Mike was in residence!)

The Picture on the left, shows Mike (centre) chatting to the Town Clerk of Castletown and the Mayoress of Castletown, discussing locator squares.
